Reading Books

Aims
This activity is designed to:
- teach your child the meaning of two key word phrases
- draw your child's attention to printed words
- encourage your child to repeat spoken phrases
- encourage your child to pay attention and join in a learning activity for short periods of time
When to start
See and Learn Phrases 1 is designed for children who:
- understand at least 50 words, including some nouns and some verbs
- can say or sign some of the words that they understand
- can follow two-keyword instructions -- for example, "wash doll" or "put bear to bed" in a play situation
Children who have completed the activities in See and Learn Vocabulary 1 should be ready to start the activities in See and Learn Phrases 1.
Choosing books
At first, choose one of the first four books (one of the "Who is eating?", "Who is sleeping?", "Who is drinking?" and "Who is sitting?" books). Work through the activities with the words and phrases in one book at a time. (Please refer to the guidance in Using See and Learn Phrases 1 for further information.)

| 2 | Attract your child's attention Say "let's read a book". Encourage your child to look at the book, starting with the cover. |

Say the phrase - for example, "[Who is eating?]" Elaborate and introduce the theme of the book - for example, "This book is about eating, shall we find out who is eating?" Move to the next page. Let your child look at the picture. Say the phrase - for example, "[doll/doll is eating]" Pause briefly, then repeat the phrase and point to each of the written words as you say them. Encourage your child to repeat the phrase. (At first your child is unlikely to repeat the whole phrase -- at this stage, we would expect them to say "doll/doll eat" or "doll/doll eating".) |

Apps settings
The apps include the following settings that control how the activity is presented:
- Provide prompts - turns on recorded voice prompts. We recommend that you provide the spoken prompts at first, and consider turning this option on when your child has begun to learn the activity.
- Enable applause - enables/disables playing applause at the end of the activity.
Moving to the next activity
You can move on to matching sight words in the next activity (Matching Sight Words) when you have read the book with your child at least three times.
