Naming Pictures
Aims
This activity is designed to:
- teach your child to say words
When to start
This activity is suitable for children who have previously selected the pictures to be named.
Children who have successfully completed the Selecting Pictures activity 3 to 5 times with the picture cards to be named should be ready to start the Naming Pictures activity.
Selecting vocabulary
Choose a set of words that your child can select. (See guidance in Using See and Learn Vocabulary 3.)
Modelling and prompting
At first, model the activity. Demonstrate the steps in the activity, encouraging your child to watch and listen.
When your child starts the activity, prompt them as needed to help them complete the task successfully.
Steadily reduce your prompts as your child becomes more confident.

Recording progress
You can record your child's progress using the Naming Pictures record.
Record the dates you first start practising naming each picture, and the dates your child first signs (if appropriate), says the word in imitation and says the word independently (Figure 4).

Opportunities for additional practice
- Offer your child a choice of 2 pictures and ask them "Which one do you want?". Again, wait for an attempt at a word/sign before you give your child the card.
- Lay 4 cards picture-side down on the floor. Point to one of the picture cards and ask "What's this?". Help your child to turn over the picture card, wait for your child to make an attempt to say/sign the word before you say/sign what it is.
- Offer similar choices during everyday activities and play - for example, "Do you want cake or ice-cream?" Again, wait for an attempt at a word/sign before you give your child the item.
Teaching additional vocabulary
Please refer to the guidance at the end of Activity 1 - Matching Pictures.
Moving on
Moving on to See and Learn Sight Words 1
When your child understands most of the words in See and Learn Vocabulary 3 you may begin to introduce them to more new words using See and Learn Sight Words 1.
Continue to encourage your child to say the words in See and Learn Vocabulary 3 that they understand but cannot yet say or sign by continuing with the naming activity with these words.
Moving on to See and Learn Phrases 3
Your child should complete See and Learn Phrases 2 before starting See and Learn Phrases 3. Your child also needs to have learned the meanings of the words taught in See and Learn Vocabulary 3 before starting See and Learn Phrases 3. (Your child may not yet be saying or signing all of the words that they understand.)
You may be working on activities in See and Learn Phrases steps 1 or 2 while teaching the vocabulary in See and Learn Vocabulary 3.
