Activity 4 - Naming Pictures

Naming Pictures

Aims

This activity is designed to:

When to start

This activity is suitable for children who have previously selected the pictures to be named.

Children who have successfully completed the Selecting Pictures activity 3 to 5 times with the picture cards to be named should be ready to start the Naming Pictures activity.

Selecting vocabulary

Choose a set of words that your child can select. (See guidance in Using See and Learn Vocabulary 1.)

Modelling and prompting

At first, model the activity. Demonstrate the steps in the activity, encouraging your child to watch and listen.

When your child starts the activity, prompt them as needed to help them complete the task successfully.

Steadily reduce your prompts as your child becomes more confident.

Opportunities for additional practice

Teaching additional vocabulary

Please refer to the guidance at the end of Activity 1 - Looking at Pictures.

Moving on

Moving on to See and Learn Vocabulary 2

When your child understands most of the words in See and Learn Vocabulary 1 you may begin to introduce them to more new words using See and Learn Vocabulary 2.

Continue to encourage your child to say the words in See and Learn Vocabulary 1 they understand but cannot yet say or sign by continuing with the naming activity with these words.

Moving on to See and Learn Phrases 1

When your child can say or sign 50 words and are beginning to understand how two words can be linked together they are ready to start the activities in See and Learn Phrases 1. For example, if your child can follow a two key word instruction such as "Give doll a drink" or "Put bear to bed" then they are ready to move on.
