Activity 8 -- Understanding Sight Words

Understanding Sight Words

Aims

This activity is designed to:

  • test your child's understanding of the words they can read
  • encourage your child to pay attention and join in a learning activity for short periods of time

When to use this activity

Use this activity to confirm that your child can read and understand the sight words in each book.

Word selection

Use the sight words in the book you are teaching that are pictured.

If your child is more sure of some words than others, include them all in the activity so that your child can be successful as often as possible.

Varying the level of difficulty

Start with two picture cards to choose from when matching less familiar words.

As your child becomes more practised with activity and more familiar with the sight words, you can increase the number of picture cards they have to choose from when matching a sight word.
