Selecting Pictures
Aims
This activity is designed to:
- test your child's understanding of spoken words
- continue to teach your child to look carefully at pictures and to identify differences and similarities
- help your child to generalize their understanding of what words mean
When to use this activity
Use this activity if you are teaching a book that includes new vocabulary or vocabulary that your child is unsure of and you wish to test your child's understanding of the spoken words.
Your child should complete the Matching Pictures activity successfully with the target vocabulary before starting the Selecting Pictures activity.
Vocabulary selection
Use the vocabulary in the book you are teaching. If your child is more sure of some words than others, include them all in the activity so that your child can be successful as often as possible.
Varying the level of difficulty
Start with two cards to choose from when selecting less familiar pictures.
As your child becomes more practised with activity and more familiar with the vocabulary, you can increase the number of cards they have to choose from when selecting.
Teaching vocabulary and grammar
Please refer to the guidance earlier in this guide on how you can teach new vocabulary and grammar while working through the teaching activities.
