Activity 7 -- Reading Sight Words

Reading Sight Words

Aims

This activity is designed to:

  • teach your child to say sight words as they read them
  • encourage your child to pay attention and join in a learning activity for short periods of time

When to use this activity

Use this activity if you are teaching a book that includes new sight words or sight words that your child is unsure of.

Your child should be able to select the sight words before being asked to read them.

Word selection

Use the words in the book you are teaching. If your child is more sure of some words than others, include them all in the activity so that your child can be successful as often as possible.

2

Attract your child's attention

Say "let's read words".

Give your child time to look at the word.

3

Ask your child to say the word

Point to the word and say "what is this?"

If needed, prompt by saying the word -- for example, "rain".

If your child correctly reads the word, say "yes -- [rain] -- this is [rain]".

If you are modelling or prompting, repeat the word -- say "this is [rain] -- [rain]"

4

Repeat the word three times.

Pause briefly between each repetition so your child can take in the information.

5 Show your child the next card.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Repeat steps 3-5 for each remaining card in the set.

Work through all of the cards in the set.

App settings

The apps include the following settings that control how the activity is presented:

  • Play voice when card is tapped -- When enabled, a recording of the word is played when a card is tapped.
  • Enable rewards -- When enabled, the sounds of applause can be played at the end of the activity by tapping the check mark.

Recording progress

You can record your child's progress using the Vocabulary and Sight Words section of the record form for the book you are working on.

Record the dates your child first reads each word.
